Support Future Connect at Bernie’s Southern Bistro!

On Wednesday, October 24th, Bernie’s Southern Bistro will be holding a fundraising event for Future Connect. From 4pm until close they will be donating 15% of their sales to the program. Don’t forget happy hour from 4-6pm or a reservation if you are coming for dinner!

Portland Parks and Recreation is a partner in Future Connect, an education initiative of Mayor Sam Adams office that reaches out to youth who are struggling to make college a reality. The Future Connect Strategies Coordinators work alongside the Teen Force Coordinators at five community centers to provide college and career courses, resources, and events for high school students.

Bernie’s Southern Bistro is a romantic southern cuisine hot spot on Alberta. They have a lush garden patio and candle lit dining room. We hear the happy hour is pretty amazing too!

Come support one of Parks and the city’s great programs for teens and a wonderful local business. What better way to spend a Wednesday evening than with a nice glass of wine and great food!

Alberta Main Street Demonstrates Results

We are pleased to report some of the accomplishments we’ve achieved working together with our businesses, commercial property owners, community partners and local residents over the past fiscal year. We have many reasons to celebrate but still have more work to do. As we launch our annual fundraising campaign, we hope you will support our efforts!
July 2011 – June 2012 Accomplishment Highlights
-New Jobs: Net increase of 75.5 new jobs created on NE Alberta Street.
-New Business: Net increase of 8 new businesses between NE 10th – 31st Ave.
-Increased Revenue: 80% of Alberta Street businesses with comparison data reported increased revenue from 2010 to 2011.
-Low Vacancy Rate: Alberta Street’s commercial vacancy rate is 4.6%, well below the Portland regional average of 7%.
-Community Investment: Volunteers contributed over 2400 hours of their time and talent. Based on the Independent Sector’s value of volunteer time this equates to a cash equivalent investment of $53,832.

Hello everyone! A lot is going on at King and the pace is picking up. Here’s a glimpse of what we’re up to:

Courtyard Garden

A volunteer youth group led by kindergarten parents Duke and Caroline Revard gave the garden program a big boost by building planter boxes in the courtyard by the cafeteria. If you haven’t seen the progress, check it out. As spring gets going, the kids will soon be planting. Do you have gardening skills, expertise, or supplies to donate? Whole Foods Tasting Fair—April 4th

Support the King School garden program and sample each course of a full meal for only $5 at the Whole Foods at 15th/Fremont starting at 5:00pm.

Papa Murphy’s Fundraiser—April 11th

Our monthly fundraiser at Papa Murphy’s at 15th/Fremont runs from 4:00-8:00pm

¿Por Que No? Profit Share—April 18th

To fund the costs associated with putting on the Mother’s Day event ¿Por Que No? taqueria at 3524 N Mississippi Ave. will be donated a portion of proceeds from all King supporters on this night. The 18th is a no-school Wednesday.

Enzo’s Profit Share—April 19th

Support our King Parents Linh and Enzo Lanzadoro and the PTA at the same time by enjoying great hand-made Italian food in a comfortable atmosphere. This final profit share of the year begins at 5:00 pm at Enzo’s Caffe Italiano, 2529 NE Alberta next to Halibut’s.

First Annual King School 5K Fun Run and Health Fair—April 28^th

Join us for the 5K (3.1 mile) fun run/walk through the neighborhood and/or the health fair in the King Facility parking lot.  There will be a lot of good information about healthy food, gardening, cooking, child safety, and more.  Registration forms for the run/walk will be coming home soon.

First Annual King School Auction—May 4th

Tickets are on sale now for the first King School Auction. Individual tickets are $35 and a table for seven is $300. Get your tickets at http://www.kingpta.org or drop by the PTA office. The scramble to have everything all lined up is beginning and we need to find volunteers to work the night of the event to handle all of the logistics from taking coats and giving directions to collecting the bids and getting the items to the purchasers to cleaning out the hall after it is all over. King PTA Auction Nears

Saxophonist and songwriter Patrick Lamb will provide the music. His focus as a songwriter and performing artist is “Old School“ R&B, Soul. He combines the influences of Funk, Soul, R&B, and a flavor of Jazz to create his own unique sound as a performer and a songwriter. As a son of a teacher, Patrick understands the need to raise consciousness about the loss of funding for the arts in public schools.

King PTA Fundraiser on Valentine’s Day

The King PTA will hold a profitshare night at Mississippi Pizza, 3552 N Mississippi Avenue, from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. Come share in the fun and don’t forget to put your receipt in the collection bin so that 20% of your purchase will go back to the school to fund the upcoming auction.

Support the King PTA at Radio Room

Join us in supporting the King School PTA raise funds to put on its first annual auction by coming out the the Radio Room on 11th and Alberta. The profitshare is on Wednesday, February 8th and runs from 5:30-8:30 but you can stay as late as you like! 10% of proceeds during the event go to King School.

Tennis Shoe Rally to Aid Food Bank

The Allen Temple C.M.E. Church is hosting a Tennis Shoe Rally, to raise funds for the Allen Temple Emergency Aide Food Bank. As of November 1st, our allotment of food from the food distribution center will be cut in half due to budget cutbacks. The purpose of the rally is to offset the cuts so we can continue to serve the community as we have faithfully done over the last 15 years or more.

We’re asking a donation of $1.00 per shoe size. Example, if your shoe size is 8 then your donation would be $8.00 (not bad huh?). If you prefer to donate food, we gladly accept it also. Two of the shortages that will be felt most is the lack of peanut butter and chili.

If there are monetary donations please make checks or money orders payable to: Allen Temple Emergency Aide Food Bank. If you wish to make food donations please contact Diane Lamberth @ 503-284-3098 (home phone) or 503-449-9747 (cell). She will be available to answer questions pertaining to delivery or pick-up of food donations as well as hours of the food bank. We thank you in advance for your generous support in our endeavor.

KNA Meeting, Wednesday Oct 12th

What a great meeting we have planned! We’re so sorry that this agenda is being released so late… Columbus Day preparations had us running around all of last week, and we’re just catching our breath.

This week’s King NA meeting will feature our last visit with Officer Ryan Bren, who has served our neighborhood as District Officer for the last couple of years and has been a pleasure to work and communicate with.

We’ll be hearing from Emily Wilson, who has worked tirelessly to put together a project to improve Two Plum Park, in particular by raising money to install a bench. Two Plum Park is one of four neighborhood parks in King, and we’re happy to help out folks who are looking to take a hand in the care and improvement of them!

Speaking of, neighbor Diego Gioseffi and his neighbors have developed a project to remove invasive species from part of the King School lot, and replace them with native plants in the ground. We have struggled to get permission from the City to go ahead with the project, but progress is being made; also, the folks who run the King Farmers Market have offered to help. Once we have a date set, all are invited to come pull weeds and help us clean up part of the King School grounds! Please join us to get an update on the planning of this project.

We’ll be getting an update on the Portland Playhouse, & its efforts towards getting a Conditional User Permit from the City, in order to resume using their building at 602 NE Prescott. In addition, King NA has had discussions with the Playhouse and nearby neighbors about parking issues ~ we’ll have a short update on this.

The Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods is looking for feedback about Last Thursday. In addition to a survey of residents living near Alberta Street, NECN is reaching out to the nearby neighborhood associations to get feedback, ideas, compliments, and criticisms about how Last Thursday operates. Please join us and share your experience with us.

There will be other short presentations on topics of community interest, as well as a bit of time to bat around ideas, projects, questions, and thoughts. Please join us for Wednesday evening’s meeting – all are welcome at our Neighborhood Association!
