Last Thursday is Coming…

From FoLT:

With 17,000 participants in the peak summer months, Friends of Last Thursday is focused on addressing the issues involved with sustaining this event in a people-powered approach. This group has saved LT from a painful death, the result of politics, collapse, self implosion and or backlash from one of many angles. FoLT will now hold a permit for LT and are geared to steer the event back towards supporting artists and performers and providing the services to allow it to continue into the future. FoLT earns and scrounges funds and gathers the volunteers each month, providing security, education of the vendors about expectations, removal of trash and recycling, street closure and logistics.
FoLT is wanting to purchase a used box truck for our Street Operations Team. We will take that box trailer and retro-fit it to carry all of the barricades, street signs, and garbage/recycling bins and what they get filled with at the end of the night. FoLT will then lend out the trailer to other community groups at low cost, with the funds helping FoLT to become more financially sustainable. This box trailer will help us support a multicultural community’s economic engine, grassroots art, creative thinking, performance opportunities, personal expression, dreaming, et al. Your contribution may be tax deductible as our fiscal sponsor is the Non-Profit Association of Oregon.

1st Annual Alberta Bar Crawl
April 25, Last Thursday
Between the hours of 6-10p.m. teams of four, distinguished by their team “dress code”, will travel down Alberta Street getting stamped at each of the ten participating bars where they are offered cheap drink specials and enjoy live music, entertainment and prizes.
At the end of the event, teams will turn in a full punch card and receive a Last Thursday pint glass.
Let’s get ready to rumble!
Money raised will help FoLT pay for services (trash, security, toilets, etc.) during the peak summer months of Last Thursday.
Sign up early at the Black Cat Cafe, 1203 NE Alberta or Al Forno Ferruzza, 2738 NE Alberta.

The purposed mural at 4906 NE 6th Avenue is in the King School Park, and has been designed through listening sessions, suggestions and ideas from the community, King School students, parents, community members, and the neighborhood association. The mural design brings the vibrancy of Martin Luther King’s strength as a meeting point for diversity. The mural will show the strength of our differences and our interdependence.

Unapproved Mural to be Fined by City, Petition of Support Circulating

Last April the Union Market at corner of Martin Luther King Jr. and Failing was repeatedly hit by taggers. As an aesthetically pleasing alternative, a mural was painted on a void green wall. The owners are now threatened with high civil penalties and monthly enforcement fees until they paint it over. If you like art in your neighborhood, stop by the Union Market 3837 NE MLK Jr Blvd and sign the petition (over 60 neighbors already did over the last two days.) Keep art in our lives.

Friends of Last Thursday to make changes to event

Changes in store for Last Thursday next year as recently released by FOLT:

New For Next Year:

Friends of Last Thursday has been working diligently to pay for the costs of the event and to minimize the impacts of 20,000 visitors to our district. We have come to realize that the only way to keep the event sustainable is to implement changes for nest year.

WHAT CHANGES?

ALL VENDORS WILL BE REQUIRED TO SIGN UP TO VEND.
While it will remain FREE for all artists, crafters, creatives, musicians and performers, all other vendors will be charged a fee. This includes food vendors carrying a temporary or restaurant food license. This will give accountability to all vendors and repeat offenders will not be allowed to vend at Last Thursday.

LAST THURSDAY WILL END EARLIER.
One big problem is underage drinkers and the after hour violence from youth gangs.

King PTA Auction Nears

Saxophonist and songwriter Patrick Lamb will provide the music. His focus as a songwriter and performing artist is “Old School“ R&B, Soul. He combines the influences of Funk, Soul, R&B, and a flavor of Jazz to create his own unique sound as a performer and a songwriter. As a son of a teacher, Patrick understands the need to raise consciousness about the loss of funding for the arts in public schools.

Free Events at Artists Repertory Theatre

Opening March 6, Artists Rep presents David Mamet’s RACE, a provocative look at discrimination, bigotry, and how we tackle, or avoid, the issues of race in our lives.

Artists Rep, in partnership with the August Wilson Red Door Project, is proud to host a forum on race and how our society, and legal system, are affected by racial issues. Artists Repertory Theatre is sincerely interested in deepening its connection and commitment to the Portland community and facilitating conversations that foster understanding, growth, and compassion. We hope you will join the dialogue.

Forum: Race, Society, and the Law

Racial injustice is one of America’s greatest disgraces. Acknowledging one’s own bigotry, and the institutionalized bigotry of our society, is uncomfortable, at best.  On Sunday, March 25 at 6pm, join Artists Rep in discussing how racial issues affect our society and the Portland community. The panel will be moderated by August Wilson Red Door Project co-founder Lesli Mones and include the Honorable Donald Letourneau, Lewis & Clark Law School professor John Parry, ACLU of Oregon board member Fred Neal, and The Skanner news editor Lisa Loving.

We hope that, together, we can shine a light on the anger, guilt, and shame of discrimination that lies beyond polite social convention.
